Delicious and made with no refined sugar when using honey or maple syrup, this Simple Summer Berry Crumble is one of those desserts I come back to again and again.
I won’t lie, we love a dessert in our house! So I’m always looking for ways to create slightly healthier versions of the things we love, without taking away from the taste!
This summer berry crumble is exactly that. It’s sweet and delicious, with a golden, oaty crumble topping that gives it plenty of texture and extra fibre.
A healthier take on a family favourite
Instead of refined sugar, I use honey or maple syrup to add sweetness, and I’ve added oats to the crumble topping for a little extra fibre. The berries become beautifully soft and jammy as they bake, while the crumble topping turns golden and crisp. It’s especially delicious served warm with a generous spoonful of natural or Greek yoghurt.
And, of course, my kids love it!
Why you’ll love this summer berry crumble
No refined sugar: when using honey or maple syrup.
Extra fibre: thanks to the addition of oats.
Quick and easy: it takes just minutes to put together.
Kid-friendly: a lovely one to make together with the kids.
Perfect for summer: use whatever fresh or frozen berries you have to hand.
Delicious served with yoghurt: creamy yoghurt alongside the warm berries and crunchy crumble is the perfect combination.
A great one to make with the kids
This is also such an easy recipe to get the kids involved with. Let them add the berries to the dish, mix the crumble topping and sprinkle it over the fruit.
There’s no need for perfect measurements or presentation, it’s a wonderfully forgiving recipe, which makes it ideal for little helpers in the kitchen.
Simple, wholesome and delicious
I love recipes like this because they prove that making a few simple swaps doesn’t mean you have to compromise on flavour. It’s still a proper dessert, still feels like a treat and is definitely something the whole family will enjoy.
Serve it warm from the oven with yoghurt and you have the perfect simple weekday dessert.
