Granny’s brown bread
This is my take on my granny’s traditional Irish brown bread — simple, wholesome, and full of nostalgic flavour. Made with everyday ingredients, it’s high in fibre, easy to bake, and perfect served warm with butter, jam, or alongside a bowl of soup. A real family favourite and freezer-friendly too!

For the dry ingredients 250 g wholemeal flour 60 g plain flour 1 tsp baking powder 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda 1 tablespoon dark brown sugar ½ tsp salt For the wet ingredients: 300 ml buttermilk 1 ½ tbsp vegetable oil 1 egg *Tip: If you don’t have buttermilk: make sour milk by adding 1 tablespoon of vinegar or lemon juice to whole milk use straight away. To top: ½ tbsp oats
Preheat the oven 190ºc fan. Line and grease a 900g loaf tin. (I use paper non stick liners)
Put both flours, baking powder, bicarbonate of soda, brown sugar and salt in a mixing bowl, stir to combine.
In a jug, whisk together the buttermilk, vegetable oil and egg.
Pour into the mixing bowl, stir to combine- it’s a wet batter. Transfer into the loaf tin. Sprinkle with oats.
Bake for 60-70 minutes turning half way through.
Once cooked tip out onto a wire rack to cool completely.
Storage: Store for 3-4 days at room temperature or 3 months in freezer.
